Cooking, cooling & cleaning: the essentials for off-grid travel

Choosing the right camping appliances plays a key role in how self-sufficient your vehicle can be. Unlike standard household appliances, these models are optimised for use with propane/butane gas or the vehicle’s 12 V electrical system. They are designed to withstand constant vibration and are specifically engineered for mobile use with 12 V power or gas. Power consumption and energy usage vary depending on the appliance and model.

Cooking and washing up in limited space

The heart of any onboard kitchen is the cooking area. While portable camping stoves are ideal for cooking outdoors, permanently installed ovens and built-in cookers with an integrated flame failure safety device provide all the convenience required for more elaborate meals. Combined with space-saving built-in sinks made from stainless steel or impact-resistant plastic, they make it possible to create a fully functional kitchen in even the smallest of spaces.

Specialist coffee machines and coffee makers, as well as low-wattage kettles, help you get the day off to a perfect start. These appliances are specifically designed for the lower amperage limits typically found on campsites.

Cooling, cleaning and comfort

Consistent refrigeration is essential for keeping food fresh. Modern refrigerators featuring compressor technology for maximum performance in hot conditions or absorption technology for silent gas operation ensure your food and drinks stay reliably chilled.

To help keep your vehicle clean and tidy, compact 12 V vacuum cleaners make light work of removing sand and dust from the interior. There is no need to compromise on personal care either: compact travel hairdryers and precise weather stations are specifically designed for mobile use and changing climatic conditions.

In addition to permanently installed equipment, portable camping lights featuring modern LED technology provide plenty of flexibility in the evening – whether you are sitting around the camping table or walking around the campsite or motorhome stopover. Each appliance is tested for vibration resistance to ensure it can withstand the demands of life on the road and changing weather conditions over the long term.

FAQ – frequently asked questions

Can I use standard 230 V household appliances in a motorhome?

Yes, to a certain extent, provided you have a pure sine wave inverter. However, standard household appliances often have a very high start-up current, which can drain the leisure battery extremely quickly. For off-grid use, specially designed 12 V appliances are often better suited to the vehicle’s electrical system. Actual energy consumption will depend on the individual appliance.

Why do camping kettles and coffee machines have a lower wattage?

Campsite electrical hook-ups are often limited to just 4 to 10 A. A conventional 2000 W household kettle could therefore trip the circuit breaker immediately. Our low-wattage models are specifically designed for these lower amperage limits, allowing them to operate reliably on campsite electrical hook-ups.

Which is better: a compressor or absorption refrigerator?

Compressor refrigerators provide consistent cooling performance even at outside temperatures above 40 °C, making them particularly suitable for travel in warmer southern regions. However, they require a reliable 12 V/230 V power supply.

Absorption refrigerators operate silently and can run on LPG, making them ideal for extended off-grid camping where little solar power is available.

What safety features are important for built-in gas stoves?

When purchasing an oven or built-in gas stove, always make sure it is fitted with a thermoelectric flame failure safety device, which automatically shuts off the gas supply if the flame goes out.

In addition, permanently installed gas systems must undergo regular gas safety inspections in accordance with G 607 (now DIN EN 1949) to ensure safe operation and compliance with the relevant requirements.
